Green Mountain

Green Mountain is a man-made cloud forest planned by Joseph Hooker to increase rainfall on a very dry Ascension Island. His close friend Charles Darwin had visited the island in 1836 and told Hooker how it was ‘destitute of trees’.

Before Hooker sent various plant species from Kew Gardens in the UK and others sent from around the world there were only a few endemic species growing on the island and today they are protected by the island’s Conservation Department.

There are also several buildings, ruins, walks and paths around ‘the mountain’ of historic interest offering brilliant views are of the whole island.
